The 17th amendment hugely contributed to this. Before its enactment, US senators were selected by the state legislatures and could be recalled by them as well. This kept the senators true to the states wants. That changed when the people voted for senators, and like you say, they don't care to deal with us anymore.

It also didn't adjust to allow for recalls. It is still illegal for states to attempt to recall federal officeholders.
