The enormous orbital debris taking out U.S. GPS birds will also in short order destroy many if not most of the Russian and Chinese constellations as well. And, the U.S. would undoubtedly retaliate to ensure their destruction.
Still, the Russians kept their terrestrial Loran-C version active while the U.S. and Euros dismantled theirs. Leading to our military and the Euro’s discussing rebuilding a newer version called eLoran. Only prototypes so far, no final plans.
In the cost scheme of things, Loran-C operated by the Coast Guard was dirt cheap and should have never been dismantled. When I say cheap I mean around $50 million a year in today’s dollars to operate sufficient land-based transmitters. In the 90’s it was around $18 million a year.
Take out everyone’s military SatNav systems including the Euro’s Galileo, and the world economy crashes as well. There is no quickly implemented alternative to these systems.
