If we went to a consumption tax we would eliminate the income tax - that means the IRS goes away.

Nope.
You still have payroll tax that many businesses get behind on and would also get behind on paying the consumption tax. As a matter of fact… you would be floored at how many businesses have trouble… or not at all… forwarding the money withheld from paychecks to the government.
Would it shrink it? Yes. But eliminate it? I don’t see how that can even be done now.

The mission of government is always to increase control and power. They will never give up federal income tax. A consumption tax would supplement, not replace, income tax.

They'd never do that. As people get older, they generally consume less. They already own their homes, furniture, cars, etc. and they're at the peak of their skill and earnings. There's no way the government is going to let that income go un-taxed. Some, myself included, would just choose to consume less to avoid the taxes.
