Matt Drudge was a long, long con as it turns out.
It is curious, though - there were in the 1990s, 3 major voices of the "new right" offering unflattering or downright negative portrayals of the Clintons - Rush Limbaugh (carrying over/building upon his popularity among young republicans and his college tour in waning years of the Reagan administration), David Brock (American Spectator) and Matt Drudge (particularly when the nascent independent internet news industry was blooming).
Curiously, Brock shifted on a dime to not only hard left, but founding Media Matters (one of the worst of the far left organizations). Drudge held on until Trump. Like Bill Kristol, John McCain, Mitt Romney, these folks obviously never held a single conviction.
Drudge is probably the most surprising. Now Brock is gay (and maybe that drives some of his politics) and there have been (denied) rumors about Drudge for decades, but hell, Ric Grenell, Douglas Murray and Dave Rubin are all gay as Easter bonnets and MAGA AF, so that isn't dispositive.
Brock looks to have just run a straight grift and flipped the money to his true beliefs. Drudge played a very, very long con.
