This. The sun is predicted to fuse all of its hydrogen and begin fusing heavier elements in a few billion years, which will cause it to swell into a red giant.
Still not great for earth as it will incinerate the inner planets, but it will be gradual unlike a supernova.
And yes, the only thing that might happen when the galaxies combine is a new stage of increased star formation as dust clouds and nebula combine.
