Apparently few people here have bothered to figure why USPS recently started operating at a loss. They actually provide a service that did (and still would) run entirely on the revenue generated from postage, if not for Congress. Virtually all of the USPS’ operating losses are due to the fact that Congress passed a law requiring them to pre-fund 75 years of future retirement benefits.
Their pension (like most) is bloated, and a huge liability at this point. But they are actually one of the more efficient government services. Maybe the most efficient and effective. And would be profitable if not for the government…which is ironic.
