He was called a liar and a racist on stage, and went on to bring that person on as his VP. The butt of jokes in the Obama admin. Documented position changes on many nationally relevant issues over the years.
Clearly, it is not talent that is keeping him relevant. None of the above has anything to do with his actual politics, but I think it’s pretty clear the only thing keeping him politically viable is his loyalty to his party and lobbyists.
