Because it was Shaq and Stanley's first year playing in an era when most teams had lots of upper class players. As another poster stated, Shaq was tough on defense his freshman year, but often got in foul trouble and his offense real took off as a sophomore and junior.

Shaq said they all wanted to be the man. CJ was clearly the best back then, but the others were all heralded players too who needed to learn how to play as a team. Also, college basketball teams back then were stacked with phenomenal talent.
CJ and Shaq were about as good as it got though for their respective positions (Shaq wasn't quite there yet on offense though his freshman year).
