I was returning from fishing early one Sunday morning around 5 AM when the entire area turned a bright green. Lasted about as long as a camera flash. I was listening to an all night talk show...one of those where night watchmen call in with all manner of convoluted conspiracy theories that were common in the 70s and 80s and have since been replaced by political message boards. Within a couple of callers on that show folks were calling in about that light and claiming all manner of silly shite...Washington had been nuked, aliens had landed, the sun had exploded. Most of the calls claimed it was the judgement day. Those folks were amped up. As it turns out is a relatively common phenomenon resulting from light refraction in the atmosphere. The rarity of this singular event was that conditions along most of the east coast were ideal for it to be observed over a very wide area...apparently it happens somewhere on the planet just about every sunrise or sunset but is only visible when conditions are ideal which usually limits the area which it is observed.

Sometime around February 1972 the Aurora Borealis could be seen in Atlanta...I can remember us being outside in damned cold weather marveling at the green "clouds" passing overhead against an otherwise pitch black sky. Apparently they were visible in parts of North Georgia just a few weeks ago. Pretty neat

Art fricking Bell. I used to fall asleep at night listening to that show when I was a kid. High entertainment.
