I know that there was some woman who purchased slaves so she could take them home a torture them in some kinda torture chamber in NOLA.

I think that was Madame LaLaurie... her mansion is on Royal Street, but in private ownership so not available for touring. The first time I learned the story was from American Horror story.. I thought it was an outlandish character in the episodes, and was shocked to learn there was a real Delphine LaLaurie that the character was based on.
Seems in real life she escaped her house fire and fled to Paris, never having to pay for her crimes.
