When I went to Chicago with my son (12) at the time.... I wanted to make sure we were safe pretty much at all times, but also make sure everything was easily accessible....
I would HIGHLY recommend the perfect area to stay is East Wacker.
66 E Wacker Pl, Chicago, IL 60601 is the address of the Hilton Garden Inn we stayed at. Easy to hop out and hit the train from there, easy to walk to Mag mile, easy to walk to see the Bean or the lakefront etc.
Great area and can't go wrong with the hotels in that area.
The biggest thing though like I mentioned, you hop off the train and you are right there at your hotel and other locations.
My last visit to CHI we stayed at the Pendry nearby and it was also amazing. Great views of the river and the skyline for us.... We never went to CHI with time to do any pool time. I'm not sure how many hotels would have outdoor pools given the weather up there, but I would assume most should have some cool indoor pools.
Love Chi, and know that yall will have a blast!

I've stayed there as well, and it is a great central location with easy access to trains and buses.
Chicago Architecture Center museum is nearby and worth a visit. Their boat tour is probably the best.
Amazon Go store is also nearby. Load the app. Scan your phone when you walk in. Pick up what you want and stroll out. It will charge it via your app. The only employees on the floor there to explain it to newbies and check ID for alcohol.
