There's an interesting video I saw on this (I'll try and find it) that explains that there are basically 3 "bursts" that tend to separate men and women physically (outside of the obvious).
The first is birth, which is very small.
The second is basically a "pre-puberty", which is where the two start to separate athletically but a lot of girls and can still compete with boys.
The last, puberty, is when the difference in athletics really shows.
Of course, to state the obvious, we're comparing athlete to athlete - no amount of testosterone in my body is going to get my arse across the finish line faster than a female sprinter. She will absolutely destroy me.
In the video, they did point out there is one particular type of athletic competition where women can hold their own against men for the most part - endurance running. The longer the run, the more the difference narrows.
