I'm a big fan of poke. Most places outside of Hawaii seem to serve it in a Build Your Own Style. When I went to Hawaii a few years back, it was very different. Most places had several different styles of fish prepared in several different ways, and there were minimal toppings to add. I enjoyed the poke more there because the fish was better / fresher and the overall taste of their styles of poke was better. That being said, I still love the Build Your Own style as well.

This is typically what you see in Hawaii

I haven't been to one place in the continental U.S. that prepares and serves it the traditional way, which is kind of odd.

Yes I'm late to the party but ever since an episode of Feeding Phil where he said he couldn't stand poke bowls I guess that stuck with me and I never really gave them a chance.

My bad because they are yummy. Just not something I would have normally sought out.

The one went to had the protein laid out like that with the exact scoopers in that pic except the trays were maybe 1/4 that size.

Very fresh and the little couple that owns it went overboard to load our bowls down and practically forced us to take samples of everything just because I asked a question.

Then she came outside and found us and gave us 2 free dole whips for dessert.

I honeymooned in Hawaii for 14 days. I gained 13 lbs, it was likely all poke

Love poke bowls we have here but it's a different experience in Hawaii.
