It’s a common theme in the book they both think the others have a lot of barbaric characteristics. The Japanese obviously do way better when it comes to things like hygiene, discipline, respect for authority etc.

But babies also aren’t executed because their father spoke out of line. The respect for authority/concern over “not losing face” is too severe in Western eyes.

I will say this, I’ve busted my wife’s chops for years any time she vacuums or we have the slightest disagreement that she is disturbing the harmony of our house. I’m so glad she got to see that scene of Buntaro apologizing for that in live action. Great scene in the book and show, but she rolled her eyes pretty hard at that one because of me.
