Spin-off from the Brian Wilson thread

I recently watched a documentary about him that was pretty good. I’m a music nerd so it was really cool hearing him talk about how particular songs came about and where he was when he wrote certain ones. Also, Brian gets most of the credit for their music as he definitely should but I just wanna give a special acknowledgment to his brother Carl. He absolutely killed the lead vocal on God Only Knows, what a beautiful song. Anyway, that’s all I have to say about that.

The term "genius" is thrown around too often, but in this case Brian Wilson was a true musical genius.

Brian Wilson was a genius on par with the Beatles. A somewhat tortured genius.

I love seeing the footage of him with the wrecking crew studio guys and gals ( Carol Kaye) breaking down song parts and what not,it’s very interesting to me.

Sorry, I don't get it. ...and I'm somewhat of a fan of the early Beach Boy stuff. The Beatles, as well as the entire British invasion pretty much ended their career.

I agree, I enjoy listening to the Beatles, Pink Floyd etc much more than The Beach Boys but Brian’s arrangements, melodies and harmonies are top notch

Didn't Brian Wilson slip into some sort of depression or something when The Beatles released Sgt Pepper and he felt that it was superior to Pet Sounds? Thought I read that somewhere.

Yes, he was right, but it's nothing to get depressed about. Everything the Beatles released was superior to anything the Beach Boys ever did.

Lyin in bed... just like... Brian Wilson did...

Exactly, nothing to be depressed about, very few could compare to the Beatles when it came to some of the albums they created

Unfortunately I don’t see Brian making it much longer with his dementia really setting in. He is one of my all time favorite artists ever. The pieces he put together are just mind blowing when dissecting them. God Only Knows is a masterpiece in every sense of the word.

Yep I’m afraid your right about his condition, the main reason I started this thread was I was watching him talk about God Only Knows and he was gonna sing the lead but instead said “ hey Carl , wanna sing lead on this one”? And of course he said heck yeah I’d love too and he nailed it, I love stories like that.

Love and Mercy is a phenomenal movie and does a great job of reenacting the pet sound sessions with the wrecking crew.
