It goes back long time but both Humans and animals are more active on a full moon
It has more to do with the light provided on a clear night during a full moon than anything else. More visibility, more activity
During the battle to move things West in the US, the full moon was referred to as a "Comanche Moon" because the majority of Comanche attacks took place on during full moons.
