I'd be shocked if you could count on more the one hand the amount of times pilots have actually used the word mayday during an emergency.

Is it more of a marine thing, where you’re actually making a distress call and requesting assistance?

In a case like this it seems like there’s not much that ATC can do to help them anyway, other than clearing a runway (which they couldn’t reach). Seems a bit different than a vessel calling for assistance. Not sure if I’m thinking about that correctly.
