The democrats never developed a bench during the Obama years. Hillary was DOA after her loss to Trump, and Bernie is a 98 year old commie. Still, they never developed a bench. The primary was filled with freakshow candidates and Joe became their only choice.
They carefully leveraged get out the vote networks in large metro areas in key swing states to harvest or even create votes under the new MIV laws. They were able to monitor in person totals until late into the night and drop MIV ballots to get Joe over the top.
