If your ex-friend is so willing to cast you aside for your political opinions, he has made you his enemy, and you didn't. But rest assured, they are not worth it. They are now eaten by cancer, and are a totally lost cause.
The party of tolerance, indeed. So funny, because THAT part of our 2 party dynamics have TOTALLY swapped places. Although, I get a clear and growing sense of intolerance towards the left from the right FINALLY these days.
