Trust a little, verify a lot.

We were about to have roof work done on our townhouse in the French Quarter and I asked for proof of workman's comp.
The guy gave me a xerox of his workman's comp insurance.

I called the company. They hadn't insured him for over a decade. He had altered the dates on his old proof and given me a xerox of that alteration.

Needless to say, we didn't use him.
