6.5 Grendel is what I hunt with on my thermal setup. It does the job, but on larger hogs , broadside hogs still run 30-40 yards, using 123 grain SST’s. 308 is better if you want no tracking IMO, but for light recoil and f/u shots and decent suppression, I tend to favor packing that Grendel around.

It’s exciting to see so many sporting the Grendel. It’s my favorite hog round too. Enough power to drop em efficiently, and with low recoil for follow up shots.

For the hogs that run 30-40 yards on broadside shots, where on the hog are you placing the bullets? Just wondering if you are shooting just behind the shoulder like a deer - if so you may be missing the lungs completely on a hog. For a broadside lung shot you have to shoot them through the shoulder, not behind the shoulder. For a quartering-away shot, you can put the bullet behind the shoulder because at that angle it will scramble the lungs. For me, perfect broadside shots I’ll take them just forward of the shoulder where the neck meets the shoulders, about halfway up the body - that’s a spine shot and drops them so fast that they don’t take one step. An ear hole shot is fine too, but hogs’ heads are just about always moving, and if you are off by a couple inches you may miss or injure the hog.
