You need to be born in Texas to be a native Texan. And you have to assimilate if you are an outsider to even be considered a Texan at all.
Texas doesn't even have a culture outside of west Texas these days. Just the worlds biggest sprawl of mcmansions, strip shopping centers, and 10 lane highways.

this is sort of true, but not entirely fair. west texas for sure has its own culture. east texas piney woods does too. houston, austin, dallas, san antonio have all kinda become the same though, which you are right about. the hill country used to have a very special and unique culture, but that is pretty much dead unless you get way, way out of town, and even then...it's nothing like it used to be. it's just gotten so crowded and full of people who arent even from texas.
anyways, to the OP's question - if you werent born in texas or didnt move there very, very young, you're not really a texan. just how it goes. i absolutely love south louisiana and the culture down here. but no matter how much i love crawfish, mardi gras, the swamp, the saints (meh), etc i'm never going to be a louisianan. i'm a texan that lives in south louisiana.

Alot of true here. Dallas and Austin in particular. Houston is massive and diverse. West Texas remains the most original Texan; people in a harsh climate, independent, mostly want to be left alone, think they have everything they need to survive, etc. I'm a sixth generation native Texan who grew up in Louisiana actually. The Mrs is from West Texas. Those are some interesting people. Much of the rest of Texas is standard suburbia; urban grass farmers shopping at whole foods.
