the best color guy since Merlin Olsen who was second best to Madden back in the day.
Merlin Olsen was a nice guy, but boring in a way. Madden for his time was good but the standards have changed. Madden never broke down plays like even Romo. You can't be just a personality now. Hell, Frank Gifford and Don Meredith used to be considered great announcers.

Madden was a an artist breaking down plays with the Telestrator.

At least for the first 3 quarters, Dandy Don was great. By the fourth quarter he was trashed. He certainly was not drinking just Lipton Iced Tea. Gifford was very good for years but by the late 80s he was spent.
I always looked forward to the late Sunday games and Madden/Sumrall and Enberg/M.Olsen for the announcing. Also liked Todd Christensen when he was on. I think overall in the 80s and into the early 90s on average NBC had the best color guys. I really liked Charlie Jones and I can remember when Vin Scully was doing football
