The Brando scenes are amazing and worth the price of the movie. As for the rest, I prefer the theatrical version.
I showed it to my son a few months ago. We watched the theatrical version up until Clark goes to the fortress, then switched discs to watch the Brando scenes. We then switched back to finish the theatrical cut.
Also, just because I'm reminded of it, there's a deleted scene where the Phantom Zone villains are actually arrested.

It was a noble effort trying to finish his version of #2, but they were unable to give it a proper ending since the original plan was to use the ending of superman #1 as the ending of #2. Donner was rushed to finish the first movie, as they were filming 1 & 2 simultaneously, and he was forced by the producers to use the turning back time ending he was saving for #2. He originally wanted to have the rocket explode in space at the end of #1, releasing Zod, and setting up #2.
