My wife and I had a miscarriage. We never even got to greet him. We did get his body, and I buried him at the foot of my great grandparents. I don't know whether its worse to get far along and know and love them or see them never even get off the boat, so to speak.
What I can say is I took the perspective that what matters most is that he existed, and we had him. It doesnt matter whether for a minute, day, decade, or century. He was here. He was loved. And so even if you only had him for three months of pregnancy or four plus decades, you'll always want more, but that's just being a little selfish.
You already had everything you'll ever need, though not want. I think that helped my wife. And that's the cross. Your sorrow is real, but you can be there for her, too. You already have it right: voluntarily pick up that cross. Choose to. That makes all the difference. It's not easy, but it's bearable and worth it.
So, I'm very happy for you. I'm so happy you got your son, and longer than expected. And you did a damn good job with him, clearly. Well done, good sir, and God bless.
