In the DSM, there's actually a decent amount of criteria that needs to be met for an ASD diagnosis. Especially compared to more common disorders. You can't just "test" someone for it. And someone coming into an office saying "I don't like wearing socks with stitches and TikTok says I have Autism" isn't getting a valid diagnosis like that either.

For the OP, instead of just labeling kids as slow or socially awkward like we used to we have a more extensive criteria that leads to the ASD label. Autism wasn't it's own diagnosis until the 80s, so it's relatively new.

And the notion that the MMR vaccine causes Autism was rooted in a horribly flawed study done by Andrew Wakefield with 12 subjects that has been debunked several times.
