The real increase is in proper diagnosing of autism. 200 years ago people died of old age, then we found out it was heart disease and cancer and the rates of both spiked.
We see the same things in cancer diagnosis. Better diagnosis means we spot more cancers earlier including age and exposure-related cancers. The result is that more people survive cancer than ever before. Spotting them sooner increases your odds of beating it but also will shift the age of diagnosis younger.
This sort of thing is why people are warned about equating correlation with causation.
