My dad didn't finish 9th grade in high school. Got hired on at FDF in 1992 making $8/hr as a parts runner. After about 6 months, he was bored and they had a few trucks down so my dad asked the shop supervisor if he could work on one of the trucks. The supervisor was surprised but said, "Don't mess it up." He ended up changing a fuel pump on one and something else on another.

The next day, the big boss calls him in along with the supervisor and asks my dad how long he's done mechanic work. My dad said about 15 years. They gave him a raise to $18/hr. I was only 13 at the time, but it felt like we were rich
