I have been part of outsourcing/downsizing moves a few times during my career. I always end up somewhere better with a nice severance payment to boot. It taught me early on that a company doesn’t have loyalty to their workforce and sometimes the highest performers who sacrificed a ton for the company are let go if it makes financial sense.

The first time our department was outsourced, we found out via a conference call and a concurrent email with severance info. The severance document had a virus that infected other documents like resumes that were sent to potential employers. That was fun.

The worst mass firing story I’ve heard was a company announced a big team outing to watch a movie and dinner after. Workers were given the choice of 2 different movies. People who were going to be let go went to one film regardless of which one they chose. If they selected the wrong film, they were told there wasn’t room left for that meeting and they had to go to the other movie. Once they were in the theater, an HR guy told them they were let go and to go home.
