A band I really like has a girl playing a Squier bass VI and she really drives the melody of most of their songs. I saw them live a few months ago and started thinking about getting one for myself but haven't pulled the trigger.

The lady from Blonde Redhead plays a really nice vintage Teisco TB-64. That's another example of a Bass VI driving the melody.
I have a few Burns Barracuda's and a TB-64 copy. The holy grail of Bass VIs, other than the original Fender Bass VI from the 60s, is the Robert Smith Bass VI made by Schecter. Smith also played the Bass VI on lots of songs.
