Educate me on why we need anything whatsoever from Mexico in order to prevent people from crossing into the US.

Mexico is seeing it as an opportunity to negotiate.

Tell me why there’s an inherent need for Mexican cooperation.

There is no inherent need, but it is just geopolitics. If the issue is important to the American ruling class, then getting some sort of concession from a maximalist starting point is just the way geopolitics is conducted.

Because if we simply secured our own border, this becomes Mexico’s problem. Quickly.

But in this situation, will the US actually benefit? The Mexican state, just from its geography, will always have a difficult time imposing its will on certain sections of the country. Anything that increases instability in Mexico is going to lead to an untenable border situation in the long-term.

bullshite. There is nothing inherent geographically limiting Mexico’s ability to govern itself. The Mexican establishment has spent 200 years making itself rich at the expense of 90% of its population. That’s why the place fricking sucks, has always sucked, and always will suck. Mexicans are why Mexico sucks. And I mean European Mexicans far more than Amerindian Mexicans. It’s not about race.

There is a cultural element of total and complete authoritarian dysfunction throughout Latin america though.

We shouldn’t tolerate it.
