If we had shown any effort all season on that side of the ball, we probably would only be focusing on the recruiting side of things and the plan this offseason would probably be to surround him with better recruiters on that side of the ball after two seasons of getting good results with lesser talent
Instead we looked completely apathetic and checked out on defense every single week no matter the opponent or situation outside of maybe 2-3 parts of a few games. That’s a sign of a rotten core. Players clearly didn’t trust him to put them in the best position to succeed and his more NFL style approach is probably pretty abrasive, so when you have no faith in the guy leading you, on top of being not talented enough on that side of the ball, it leads to a historically bad defense. It probably added salt in the wound watching that same dude sit in the booth every week and emote into the camera like “See?! It’s the players not me!” After every bad play
The talent on the roster is certainly a big part of our issues last year after we completely whiffed in the portal in comparison to crushing the portal in his first year. Think the staff is being a lot more cautious in the guys they take in to avoid that kind of scenario happening again, because I’m sure these outside transfers all being trash, making cash, and not giving a shite just expedited the collapse of the Matt house era
Most exciting thing about Baker is he gets buy in from his guys, very vocal kind of guy and he will get guys playing hard for him. That alone would bring even out defense last year to the top 70
