The problem with that is the semester ends in Dec and starts again a week after the NCG. And some schools on the quarter system it will have started already

That could be a good thing that some schools could potentially take advantage of, I'd think. True, the winter quarter has started, but the sprig quarter won't start until...well, spring.
So players could still enroll for the Spring quarter and be eligible to participate in spring practice. It would give them more time to make their decisions, though granted, much fewer options.
