First off, this is NOT a bash BK post, but no top program is going to target BK for their HC position. Look at BK as a candidate to sell to a fanbase through another AD’s eyes. He is in early 60’s now. He is not a “hot name” candidate pool coach. He is considered a good, not elite, coach and recruiter. Right or wrong he has a reputation as not winning the big games. He just had the nations #1 offense and the Heisman trophy winner and still lost 3 games. He was not on our fanbase wish list when we were looking and became the best option when he reached out as the search had made its way to the Stoops tier. He is doing very well here and can lead us to a NC. But this is his last stop as he has said for the reason listed above. We will have stability at the top for many years. And he does not hold any leverage for reasons listed above in any contract extension requests.

I’m going to say that he wasn’t on our fan bases wish list at the beginning in part because it didn’t seem like he’d be attainable. Obviously Lincoln Riley was the “flashy” candidate. There was a certain, ahem, “element”, who wanted Napier. People talked about Lane.

Kelly was and is far and away above the “Stoops tier”.

As far as this being his last stop, I believe he is 100 percent committed to that under the current circumstances, and barring something extraordinary happening. That extraordinary thing MIGHT be Michigan opening up.

For all I know, he may despise the University of Michigan. But if a back-to-back playoff team has an opening, they ready to win now and it would make sense to look at a guy like Kelly. He could also argue they are closer to the National Title next year than LSU.
