Pretty sure we had some baseball players do this. NIL covered their tuition plus a lot more. Gave up their scholarship to other players not getting much NIL or no NIL at all

That's because there's only about 1/3 the amount of scholarships to roster players in baseball. There's zero chance this would be allowed in football. Too many teams would take advantage of it. It's why 2-sport athletes's scholarships have to count as a football scholarship. You could be the best basketball player on the team and a 3rd string TE on the football team, but your scholarship counts towards the football's 85. Coaches like Bear Bryant were getting extra football players by putting them on basketball, track, swimming, whatever, scholarships, even if they didn't play those sports. There may be a loop hole right now (I doubt it or it seems we'd have heard about it), but it would get closed real quick.

When do we actually have to be down to the 85? What's the hard date? Take Duce Chestnut for example. He clearly wasn't happy with his playing time and quit after 4 games so he could preserve his redshirt and eventually transfer. And I'm sure he wants to graduate 1st so he can transfer anywhere. What if he doesn't graduate till May? Surely we can have 86 guys until he officially leaves and gives up that spot, right?
