Todd Gurley blew out his knee in November he was the 10th pick in the draft.
I would say the best example of what could happen by playing is Jaylon Smith from Notre Dame. He was projected to be a top 5 pick in the draft. Was injured during the bowl game against Ohio State. He fell to the 34th pick but he ended up with lots of issues during the rehab and I don't think he was even able to practice until over a year after he was drafted. It doesn't happen that offend but is it worth even taking the chance. I just depends on the player and how important playing in the bowl is to them.

Well, are they not already being played to pay? And quite well from what we hear.
They just need to keep up their end of the bargain. None are amateurs anymore.
And next year, should they play in any meaningless preseason games? An injury then is just as likely and could affect their earning potential later on.
Life is a risk.
