a run at a Final Four simply requires you make the tourney, and you then have a chance to make a run at a Final Four.

We were never going to miss the tourney again with Will Wade as our coach, so we essentially would have a chance to make that run every year.
That in itself is enough to keep a fan base engaged, and how you get people showing up for November and December basketball games like Wade was getting.
Wade had 9000+ paid tickets in Novemberr against teams like McNeese and Belmont and Northwestern in his last year.
McMahon is seeing 7000 at best against a Big12 opponent this year. There was hope last year and we were seeing that 9000+ early on, even against bad opponents. The crowd for the KState game is very telling, and if the trend continues and you see less and less as the season goes on, then that's the big problem and why he needs to go at the end of the season.
