And make sure it's a 6 point socket and not a 12 point

Three things that may help.....
If you have a short piece of 1 inch PVC pipe, use this over the end of wrench to make the handle longer. This will give you better leverage to "break" the bolt loose. OR.... use a hammer and maybe the ratchet wrench extension piece to hit on the end of the bolt. Doing this might loosen the rust to allow the bolt to come out a little easier.
Spraying some "liquid wrench" on the bolt and allowing it soak for an hour++ would also help loosen the bolt.
