Let's just say LSU has a *good* team next year. We only have, say, 2 losses (which is reasonable) and are ranked #10ish heading into final game of season, poised to make it into the post-season. Then all of a sudden Nussmeier (or some other very key player) gets injured. We end up barely beating Arkansas in an ugly game as our backup QB struggles to get offense going, but we finish 10-2 on the year. It's unclear if or when Nussmeier will return. The committee then says "frick you, you won't be the same team without [insert name of key player]" and leaves us out of the playoff.
Florida State was left out for a very simple reasoning-
the SEC has earned so much respect that it has become impossible to leave out of the 4 team playoff. When Alabama beat Georgia, then Alabama claimed that spot.
What happened to Florida State was:
Texas beat Alabama on the road comfortably, won their conference, had the same overall record. You can't take Bama without taking Texas too.
Someone else had to go; Michigan (Big 10) is untouchable. We saw that this season with the cheating scandal. It would have been appropriate to ban them this season as punishment, but the Big 10 wouldn't tolerate that.
Washington or Florida State. Fla State lost their QB, decision made easy.
