A defense carrying that team as far as they did is a complete anomaly.
LSU's offense carried it to a winning record.

Iowa played the

73
84
88
90
102
103
105
106
116
124
132

Ranked offenses. Only Utah St (26th) and Penn St (12th) were teams they played with top 70 offenses in the regular season.

It's easy to have a fake arse good defense when you play high school offenses every week.

They gave up 26 and 31 to Michigan and Penn St

Denbrock had the undeniable #1 offense against actually good defenses.

LSU should be sweeping all awards that could even potentially be given to an offensive player except TE and RB.

As soon as I saw this thread, I was putting together a similar post to yours. Talking heads keep applauding Michigan, Penn St., and Iowa's defense but if any had bothered to watch any of their games, they would've seen that they have no good offenses. Their defensive numbers are highly inflated.

Agreed. Who you play is as important as when you play them.

It's actually much harder to win when you can't score in modern football. Shootouts happen all the time between high-powered offenses. In Iowa's case they were always one blown assignment from a loss. For them to go 10-3 on pure defense is nothing short of a miracle.
