Florida State was 3rd in the coaches poll and first in the AP, Nebraska was 1 and 2, West Virginia was 2 and 3. So you have the AP poll to thank for FSU getting in that year.
Actually, you have the organizers of the Orange Bowl to thank for that because it was the bowls themselves who still determined the match-ups, not computers or voters or a Committee. And this is why they did it:

Undefeated Nebraska was assured of a spot in the national championship game. The organizers chose Florida State as the Cornhuskers' Orange Bowl opponent, feeling that the Seminoles’ pattern of dominant victories outweighed Notre Dame's head-to-head win and West Virginia's undefeated record. (Florida State had easily beaten Miami and Maryland, two teams which the Mountaineers struggled to beat.)

quote:Nope, if they weren’t ranked #1 in the AP poll, which created a significant gap in points between them and West Virginia, then WVU would have come out second in the coalition rankings and played Nebraska in the Orange Bowl. The Big 8 champ was tied to the Orange Bowl but the ACC and Big East weren’t tied to any of the large bowls which would create the 1 v 2 matchup when possible. That’s how you faced Miami in the Sugar Bowl the year before.
