There is a reason they broke the legs of those crucified. It was a long and arduous suffocation, lasting days. If the execution happened on the Sabbath, the Romans sped up the process, by breaking their legs, so the Jewish people could enjoy Shabbat, which happened at, and continues to happen at, sundown on Friday evening.
