You guys are missing the point about the manufacturers having service centers in major cities.

Sure out of warranty work would still be done in a small local mechanic shop but warranty work will likely require you to drive to the next city over vs going down the road to the local dealership.

Wouldn't a local shop just get approved to do work on certain brands of cars?

I have a goodyear store near my home that does all the work you go to a dealership for. I could see someone like them being licensed to do Ford vehicles.
