One of their last big achievements was the air defense keeping Germany from invading. They were down to their last good fighters when Germany changed strategiesxand bombed cities instead. This bought time to replenish the fighters. They had a very complex yet basic defense and notification system set up with their radar and ability to scramble fighters. Had they been invaded we have no foothold and no way to prestage, would have required us to come from south/Med. And then Russia likely would have taken more of Europe.
