He's been the GOP candidate the past two presidential elections, winning one, and is on pace for a third.
In no world is Trump not considered the leader of the party.
Even those that despise him understand his current position.

This is where I disagree. I think there are a number of people in the apparatus who think it is otherwise and/or are actively working to ensure that it is.
As I said above, my point is not meant as some sort of defense/excuse FOR Trump. I recognize what a mess the whole situation is. He's a part of it, sure. It's far from something of solely his making. If you can't see THAT you are missing a lot.
