Why do universities hire a firm to do a coaching search for them? What exactly is the firm doing that an AD can't do himself? A school usually has only handful of candidates that it is seriously looking at.

Good question. I'm going to take a stab. I think this procedure helps all parties when they dive into semantics. If a search firm approaches Coach Smith at Downtown State to see if he is interested in the X job and word leaks out he can honestly say " I have not spoken to any one at X about that job". Its some 'cover of darkness' stuff. Some AD's are well suited for this and don't use search firms. Some should have considering the way they botched it.

I guess its like a 'coaches headhunter'.Some search firms get contacted themselves by agents and it can go both ways.

As I recall the last time LSU used a search firm, we got Curley.
