Since when were evangelicals not allowed to eat shell fish or pork? I think he's confusing Johnson with Jews.

The facility with which Christians exempt themselves from the portions of the Bible that they don't like is very ... utilitarian.

It goes all the way back to Paul deciding that non-Jewish converts need not be circumcised. Lots easier to get converts, when you don't demand that they slice their weiners. That was some creative "theology," and it set the tone for the next two thousand years.
