The term 'semite' was first popularized by a French writer in the mid-19th century. He was a racist. He lumped Arabs and Jews, as semites, in to an inferior stereotypic category as compared with superior 'Aryans'.
But in 19th century Europe the vast majority of Semites were Jews. So "Semite" was quickly conflated with "Jew". The term "antisemitic" derives subsequent to that etymologic Jew-Semite admixture.
