Is the noise level surpressed more dramatic with a round that's sound barrier close, like a 22LR or 9mm vs shooting a 556 or such that is already over the sound barrier by a fair amount. Or is it just catching the gas expansion and the round velocity itself plays very little into how loud.

Subsonic rounds have a noticeable decrease in sound because of the elimination of the super sonic crack.

I’m not 100% sure what you’re asking, but a .22 LR unsuppressed is around 140 db, with a suppressor it’s around 112 db. A .223 unsuppressed is around 155 db, suppressed is around 130 db.

My suppressed .223 will still make my ears ring sometimes, but probably because I already have tinnitus. Bolt actions will make suppression more dramatic in any caliber.
