story wise, I doubt it really matters. You could easily catch up on that on wiki or somewhere.

I would play them because they are fantastic games, though. If I remember correctly the Miles Morales game isn't terribly long.

EDIT: just looked it up and to beat the main story of the first game, it's a 17-20 hour playthrough and 35 or so to 100% it. Miles Morales is much shorter...7-10 hours to complete the main story and 18-20 for 100%. Wouldn't be too much of at hindrance to run through both of them, and it would give you a good feel for both characters so you can mostly hit the ground running in the new game.
